A Home With A History

73 Kingsway, located in the coveted Crescent Wood neighborhood, holds a rich historical significance with notable former residents. John James "Jack" Borebank (1870-1912), a real estate agent, was born in West Hallam, Derbyshire, England. After immigrating to Canada, he settled in Winnipeg, actively involved in real estate until his return to Toronto in 1910. Tragically, he perished in the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912, while returning from a European vacation. His legacy lives on through Borebank Street in Winnipeg. From 1943 to 1970, the house was inhabited by Frederick Gerar Allison (1904-1989), a distinguished physician. Born in Stayner, Ontario, he moved to Winnipeg in 1910. He graduated in Arts (1924) and Medicine (1929) from the University of Manitoba, pursuing postgraduate studies in Vienna and London before specializing in internal medicine in Winnipeg. Allison made significant contributions, serving as President of the Manitoba Medical Association (1959-1960) and Chair of Manitoba Medical Services (1961). He played a key role in proposing a pension plan for doctors as part of the Canadian Medical Association committee. Allison married physician Gerda Elisabeth Fremming in 1939, and they raised a family together. He passed away in Winnipeg in 1989 and was laid to rest in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
